Want to spend a summer in Japan?

Summer in Japan meas many things. Summer is colorful local festival with Japanese men and women in their beautiful Yukatas (summer kimonos). It is sitting by a river with friends watching spectacular fireworks blossom overhead.

And summer with UTREK is hiking in the Japan Alps, making interesting Japanese handicrafts, and meeting lifelong friends.

The UTREK summer in Japan is an opportunity for foreign youths to travel to Japan, live with a Japanese host family, and participate in UTREK's internatioanl summer camp and cultural workshops.

What is UTREK?

UTREK is a non-profit Japanese exchange organization whose main objective is to develop global understanding and leadership skills in you and adults. UTREK administers a program combining an international exchange experience and outdoor camp. UTREK's combination of family and camp experiences introduces young people to other cultures and how the surrounding environment has affected those cultures.

Leave your country

July 11(Fri)

Arrive at Tokyo/Narita Airport and meet UTREK staff.
Stay over night at Yoyogi Youth Hostel

July 12(Sat)

Orientation and Welcome Ceremoney at the National Olympic Memorial Youth Center. Meet your host family.

July 12(Sat) - August 6 (Wed)

Homestay (except for August 2 - August 5: International Camp in Nagano)


There are some optional activities during your homestay. Host families might sign you up for a few or all of them, or might have their own plans.

Day trip to Yokohama/Minatomirai
: A very popular shopping and entertainment area in Yokohama.

<<Why Yokohama??>>
In the early 17th century, the Shogunate of the Tokugawa military government closed Japan to the rest of the world for more than 200 years. This isolation lasted until the 19th century when a growing number of foreign ships began entering Japanese waters. Commodore Perry was sent to Japan as a representative of the United States to open the country and thereby establish a trans-pacific shipping route and obtain protectors for whaling ships.
Representing the tremendous power of modern civilization and invention, the American expedition let by Commodore Perry succeeded in opening Japan, and she entered into commercial treaties and began trading actively with other nations, thus breaking out of self-imposed isolation and into a globalizing world. Yokohama emerged on the stage of world history as one of the first Japanese ports to be opened under the the Treaty of Peace and Amity between the US and Japan in 1854.

Day Trip to Asakusa and Boat Trip along the Sumida River:
Asakusa is home to Senso-ji, built in 645 A.D. it is one of Japan's oldest and most impressive temples. The colorful back streets surrounding this area offer a glimpse of old Japan

International Camp

August 6 (Wed)

Afternoon: Farewell Ceremony at the National Olympic Memorial Youth Center. Spend the night at a hotel with the other delegates and the UTREK staff.

August 7(Thu)

Everyone leaves the hotel and heads for the Narita airport by Limousine bus.
